Scott Morrison says government has 'open mind' on post coronavirus migration overhaul
Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Australia must think about how temporary visas holders can meet workforce shortages as Australia's economy recovers from the coronavirus pandemic.
He made the comments in an address to the Australian Financial Review Business Summit on Tuesday, in a speech focusing on growing the economy out of the recession.
The pandemic has stalled Australia's migration program - with the net migration intake expected to fall into negative levels for the first time since World War II.
Mr Morrison said the government had to keep an open mind on overhauling the migration program following this impact.
“We must re-look at the role that temporary visa holders play in meeting our economy’s workforce requirements, where Australians do not fill these jobs,” he said.
“Rather than taking Australian’s jobs, we need to instead appreciate how filling critical workforce shortages with temporary visa holders can actually create jobs elsewhere in the economy and, in particular, sustain growth and services in our regional economies.
"I can assure you this won't go away when the pandemic ends."

NSW Treasurer wants portion of international arrivals cap set aside for international students
Dom Perrottet wants to prioritise some international students over Australians to keep the local economy ticking.
Education for international students is the country's fourth-largest export and Mr Perrottet says in New South Wales it is worth more than tourism.
"We believe it would make sense to use some of the cap to bring back international students," he said.
"It doesn't have to be a huge amount but we can scale up over time.
"What we would like to do is ensure we have international students forming a component of that so we can support that aspect of our economy … it is one that is very important for many people who rely on this aspect of the economy to make a living."

Mr Perrottet has said a national approach "would be best" rather than different state approaches.
However it is achieved, New South Wales and Universities Australia are pinning their hopes on getting some international students back as soon as July.

하지만, 뉴사우스웨일스와 호주 대학들은 7월 안에 몇몇 유학생들을 다시 데려올 수 있을 것이라는 기대를 걸고 있다.
이렇게 미디어에서 꾸준히 유학생 수가 감소하니 빨리 데려와야한다고 말해줘야 보더도 빨리 열리지않을까...

International student numbers plunge as Universities Australia defends lobbying efforts
The pipeline of new overseas students plunged by more than 60 per cent in the second half of 2020, as the peak body for Australian universities defended its failed efforts to convince the Morrison government of the need for an urgent plan to bring back international students.
Universities Australia, which represents the country’s 39 universities, estimates at least 17,300 jobs were shed from Australian campuses in 2020, with the loss of international student fee revenue the major cause of budget pressures.
“If you’re a lobby group you have to have a functioning relationship with the government. On a number of issues the government has not been responsive,” he said.
Chancellor of Victoria’s Federation University Terry Moran said Universities Australia needed to advocate for more “imaginative” solutions for facilitating the return of international students
“In the face of the reduction in overseas students coming to Australia, in the need to rebuild Australia as a destination for overseas students, it would be good if there were more imaginative solutions to the problems we face coming for discussion from Universities Australia,” Mr Moran said.

모런 총장은 "호주 유학생이 줄어드는 상황에서 해외 유학생들의 목적지로 호주를 재건해야 하는 상황에서 호주 대학으로부터 논의를 위해 우리가 직면하게 될 문제들에 대해 더 창의적인 해결책이 있다면 좋을 것"이라고 말했다.
